My name is Sally Muir and I have been working with parents for over twenty years. My journey into positive parenting and confident-kids has been both a personal and professional one.
Recently I have become increasingly concerned about those who work or have other caring responsibilities and the lack of time they have to spend with their families, taking care of themselves or just having fun. Taking time to reach a parenting class could increase the pressure, so I have expanded my classes to include everyone by developing an online service.
History
After a highly successful nursing career I accompanied my husband and two children on a five year diplomatic posting to Washington DC in 1984, where I trained in the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), both as a parent and a facilitator.
I was a typically autocratic mother, shouting, punishing and even whacking my kids (it was more acceptable in those days). It wasn’t working and their misbehaviour was escalating. It felt like I was always nagging bribing or punishing them, it all felt very stressful, and I wondered where we would all end up, so looked for a way to change things.
Attending a parenting course in the USA showed me a way that fitted my inner most values – respect, equality and love, and I have now evolved my own personal style, drawing from this and all my life experiences.
On returning to the UK, I qualified as a Systemic Counsellor at the Institute of Family Therapy UK; and went on to train in NLP – Influential leadership and Essential Coaching Skills, plus Diversity and Inclusion, and Training Trainers.
I introduced parenting courses locally in 1989, which then took off within the local health centres. These evolved to include a unique service within the Corporate Sector, the first of it’s kind.
Starting my own business in 1995 I have been running parenting courses in-house for a variety of organisations and charities, including many branches of BP and the BBC, and other large multinational companies.

Gradually the training programmes have evolved and I now run parent coaching days within businesses, and courses where suitable. I provide a private coaching service for parents, which can include other life issues such as work/life balance, and am often asked to speak at conferences and on National Radio. I have been on Radio 4 three times in relation to parenting skills and parenting teenagers.
Being very grateful for the skills I learnt which have seen me through some tough personal times, I would love to share my knowledge and expertise with you.
I have twenty- two years of personal experience of using democratic parenting skills, and twenty years of experience facilitating other parents (in the USA and UK) to draw from.
I welcome the opportunity to share the gifts given to me, and help you find your own personal way of parenting, one that is based on equality and respect, a way that builds responsibility in the whole family.
